Albanian Kastriot Myftaraj Ban Islam and Close All Mosques in Albania

Kastriot Myftaraj, has recently celebrated in articles the genocide in Sebrenica and called for the deportation of all practicing Muslims of Albania to Turkey. It should come as no surprise, perhaps, that articles of Mr. Myftaraj have also been published in a blog named The Gates of Vienna, frequented by Breivik. After all, Breivik champions in his declaration of European Independence the very same idea of deportation of Muslims from the Balkans, while adding a plan of partition of Albanian territories to Christian neighbors like Montenegro and Greece.

Albanian journalist Kastriot Myftaraj is being sued by the country's leading Muslim organisation for writing two articles critical of Islam in the small circulation Tirana daily Sot (Today).

He has been accused of inciting religious hatred for claiming that "Islam harms Albanian national coherence" and that the best response is to "outlaw the Muslim religion in Albania and close down all mosques."

The idea of mass conversion to Christianity for the sake of European integration is not something championed by Mr. Myftaraj.

According to the Albanian writer, Ismail Kadare - the historical accident of conversion to Islam. Islam is understood to be foreign and inadmissible in Europe. At the very least, public displays of Islamic identity, particularly headscarves, have to be prevented so that they don’t taint the image of the country in the eyes of the West.

Earlier this year, in March, the Youth Muslim Forum of Kosovo demanded the removal of the pictures of Mother Teresa, an Albanian Catholic nun and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate from state institutions.

As of today they remain displayed in most government buildings of Kosovo.

In June, for three consecutive Fridays, Muslim protesters demanded the right to build a new mosque in the center of the city, a demand neglected for over twelve years by the authorities.
According to Kerem Oktem of Oxford University, Muslim communities throughout the Balkans complain of difficulties in attaining building permits for new mosques, particularly in countries like Albania and Kosovo that emerged from the Ottoman Empire with a majority Muslim population.

In the background of these protests for building a new mosque, however, stands the newly built Catholic Cathedral. The government of Kosovo demolished a high school in the capital Pristina in order to open the space for the building of the cathedral and Muslim protesters see the engagement of the government for the building of this cathedral – the late Kosovar President, Ibrahim Rugova, was the main promoter and fund raiser for this project – as another indication that the government favors and is trying to impose Catholicism.
