Will the Macedonia Muslims be able to re-Build Historic Burmali Mosque Destroyed by Serbs 85 Years Ago?

Macedonian Muslims demand reconstruction of the Burmali Mosque destroyed by Serbs in 1920s.

The issue of the Burmali Mosque actually came up after the Macedonian orthodox church announced that will build a church on the same square.

The Muslim population in Macedonia came together for the Burmali Mosque, which was built in 1495 during Ottoman era, and staged a big rally in the capital city of Skopje.

During the rally, azan was recited on the site where the Burmali Mosque once standed after 85 years.

Organized by several NGOs, people from different parts of Macedonia came to Skopje. Muslims read parts of the Holy Koran and prayed together for the reconstruction of the Burmali Mosque, shedding tears. Called as "testimony for the Burmali Mosque" by the organizers, people said, they hope that their presence will be taken into consideration by the politicians. Thousands of police officers secured the area against any tension. However, highly anticipated by the Macadonian public, the rally ended peacefully.

On the other hand, it seems unlikely to rebuild the Burmali Mosque any time soon. Skopje Municipality announced recently that they will not give permit for any religious buildings in the center of the city.

The issue of the Burmali Mosque actually came up after the Macedonian orthodox church announced that will build a church on the same square.

Albanian, Turkish and Bosnian Muslims in Macedonia are asking for the Burmali Mosque reconstriction as "a compensation for a shameful mistake in the past", not a "new demand."

As Muslim population in Macadonia make their claims with peaceful demonstrations, Macedonian government is not clear how to reply to the demands.
