In Support of the Ground Zero Mosque Islamic Culture Center

The Ground Zero Mosque was a 1st amendment issue, and the conservatives seem to conveniently let the Constitution slip away when it is supporting something they don't like. He didn't come out and "support" the Mosque - he stated that it was well within the rights of the individuals wishing to build it to build it there, and there was nothing that could be done by the government - city or state - that could stop it if they met all of their legal and financial obligations. Another thing that conservatives conveniently leave out of the conversation.

You get the Constitution the way it is - all or nothing. The first Amendment doesn't state the freedom of speech "so long as you like it" or freedom of religion "as long as you support it and are not afraid of it". It is "all inclusive". This means it is all or nothing - no half-way point.

If you didn't support the right of the individuals to build the mosque where they had wanted to, then you hated the Constitution, because it was the US Constitution that made it possible. Nothing else. If it could have been stopped, someone would have done it in the courts. But it couldn't be stopped. Because of the First Amendment. And that is how the US Constitution works - it protects EVERYONE from EVERYONE else.
